PSEKA: Netflix Betrays Democratic Principles for the Sake of the Turkish Market

September 16, 2024

NEW YORK – The International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus- PSEKA released the following statement concerning Netflix being pressured by the Turkish government into restricting the streaming of the series ‘Famagusta’ to only Greece and Cyprus though it was scheduled to stream worldwide on September 20:

The recent announcement that Netflix will no longer broadcast ‘Famagusta’ outside of Cyprus and Greece due to direct pressure from Turkey, is not only a disappointment, but a betrayal of Democratic principles.

Netflix intended to release the ‘Famagusta’ series depicting the story of the illegal tragic invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974 to international audiences on September 20, 2024. The Turkish Government applied pressure and Netflix cowered and refused to stand up to the authoritarian regime.

Turkey has used this type of pressure to suppress films depicting the Armenian Genocide, the terror against the Kurdish population and other minorities. This is simply an attempt to hide the crimes committed during the brutal illegal invasion of Cyprus in 1974.

This is the 50th Dark Anniversary of the illegal invasion and continued occupation of 37% of the Republic of Cyprus, a member of the United Nations and the European Union.

We call on Netflix to reconsider their decision and not allow the authoritarian regime of Turkey to suppress our freedoms and apply censorship in our homes.
