Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark Weds in Royal Athens Ceremony

ATHENS – Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark married American lawyer Matthew Kumar on September 28 with international royals in attendance and dozens of onlookers gathered outside the Metropolitan Cathedral where her parents were married 60 years earlier and where the funeral service for her father, the late former King of Greece, Constantine II.

The wedding came more than four years after it was postponed because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that swept the world and essentially prohibited public gatherings to prevent the further spread of the coronavirus.

“On what should have been our wedding weekend – the love and support from friends and family have been so appreciated. We can’t wait to celebrate with all of you in Greece once it’s safe xx,” Princess Theodora said in May 2020.

She is the youngest daughter of the late former king, the second cousin of Britain’s King Charles III, and was wed to Los Angeles lawyer Matthew Kumar in an Orthodox ceremony after being walked down the aisle by her older brother Pavlos, said Reuters.

Crowds outside lined the streets to get a glimpse of the couple as Theodora, 41, wore a white embroidered dress by Greek designer Celia Kritharioti with a long veil attached to a tiara, the attendees including Spain’s former Queen Sofia, paternal aunt of Theodora.

“The couple’s desire to have their wedding in Athens reflects their love for Greece, the strong ties they maintain with the country and their desire to share Greek culture and hospitality and identity with their guests,” the Greek royal family said in a statement.

Born in London, Theodora earned a bachelor degree in theater arts and moved to Los Angeles in 2010 to become an actress. She made her debut in the TV soap opera ‘The Bold and the Beautiful’ a year later.

King Constantine and Queen Anne-Marie were married almost 60 years and had five children – Princess Alexia, Crown Prince Pavlos, Prince Nikolaos, Princess Theodora, and Prince Philippos – although the monarchy was abolished in 1973.

Constantine II was 27 and had been king for three years when he was forced into exile in 1967, the end of Greece having a king coming at the hands of the then-ruling military junta and again in 1974 in a referendum in the year democracy was restored.

Theodora and Matthew, 34, were married by His Eminence Metropolitan of Syros, Dorotheos II, with several family members serving in the wedding party, according to an official statement.

The bride’s brothers Crown Prince Pavlos, 57, and Prince Phillipos, 38, were the groomsmen as Crown Prince Pavlos and Crown Princess Marie-Chantal’s second son Prince Achilleas-Andreas. Meanwhile, Pavlos and Marie-Chantal’s daughter, Princess Maria-Olympia, and Princess Alexia’s eldest daughter, Arrietta Morales de Grecia, were asked to be bridesmaids, said People magazine.

The couple had a busy week before their wedding. Theodora, Matthew and her mother Queen Anne-Marie had an audience with the Archbishop of Athens, Hello! reported. They also stepped out at their wedding venue a day before the ceremony.
