Praise for Theros’ Viewpoint

To the Editor:

Ambassador Theros presents a historically foretelling analysis of the Gaza War in ‘Is Middle East History about to Repeat Itself?’, TNH, print edition, May 18, that deserves praise for its insightful frankness.

Theros makes a pointed statement: “To make Israel’s future even bleaker, its announced determination to eradicate Hamas will fail. The IDF has not defeated Hamas; it keeps popping up in areas the IDF claimed it had cleared.”

But even if, assuming arguendo, Israel defeats Hamas, this brings to mind what Yuval Noah Harari, the renowned Israeli author of ‘Sapiens’, et al, and professor of history at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, said about it: “If Israel wins the war against Hamas without providing for an alternative future for the Palestinian population, we’ll only get something even worse than Hamas a few years down the line.”

Dr. Harari, while vehemently condemning Hamas, is critical of the divisive and dysfunctional politics of Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu, who Harari says should have taken responsibility for October 6th and resigned.

The solution, Harari believes, is not trying to correct history or attaining an absolute justice, but producing peace. This, Harari, concludes, must entail giving the Palestinians hope for the future, dignified lives, and their own State in their homeland – which Harari opines is also in Israel’s best interest and not a concession.

Theros and Harari recognize, as Theros says, “…that peace can come only through diplomacy and not military coercion.”
