Popular Actress Jessy Papoutsi Loses Battle with Cancer

ATHENS – Actress Jessy Papoutsi lost her battle with cancer on July 1, after being hospitalized for over a month at the G. Gennimatas hospital in Athens.

Born and raised in Athens, she worked for more than twenty years at the National Theater during her thirty-seven years on the stage.

On TV, Papoutsi performed in many popular series that established her as a fan favorite, particularly in comedic roles. Among her many TV credits were the shows Epta Thanasimes Petheres (7 Deadly Mother-in-Laws), Emeis kai Emeis, Solo cariera, and Kai oi tesseris itan yperohes (And the Four were Excellent).

On the big screen she demonstrated her impressive talent in the films of Vasilis Vafeas Anatoliki Periferia (East Periphery) (1979), and Repo (Day Off) (1982), Michalis Reppas and Thanasis Papathanasiou’s Safe Sex (1999), Nikos Zervos’ Vitsia gynaikon (Women’s Vices), and Roz olotahos (Full Pink Ahead) by Dimitris Yatzouzakis (2001).

She also appeared in many television films as well.

Jessy Papoutsi was married to lyricist Giannis Manios and she had a son, director Giorgos Kalioras, from her previous marriage to the actor Thanos Kalioras.
