Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos Funeral Service (Video)

NEW YORK. Family, friends and police officers pay their respect and mourn the passing of Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos at the final farewell. 

“Police Officer Anastasios Tsakos spent his career helping and protecting strangers and made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so. And now, it’s amazing to see the outpouring of support for his family during these difficult times,” Dermot Shea, Police Commissioner of the City of New York said.

Οn Tuesday 27, Greek-American police officer was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver  as he was directing traffic away from the scene of an earlier deadly crash, police said.

Anastasios Tsakos, 43, was on the Long Island Expressway in Queens just before 2 a.m. when he was struck by a car driven by a woman who was intoxicated and driving with a suspended license, Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said at a news conference.

Shea said the driver who struck the officer was apprehended soon after.

Jessica Beauvais, 32, of Hempstead, was arrested on multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, aggravated unlicensed driving and leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in death.

As she was being walked out of a police station in handcuffs Tuesday afternoon, a tearful Beauvais told reporters: “I’m sorry because I hit him and that he’s dead.”

The fallen officer was a 14-year veteran of the police department who leaves a wife and two young children, officials said.
