Police Detained 163 and Arrested 30 during Rallies for Grigoropoulos

December 7, 2023

ATHENS – Police sources on Thursday said that preventative action taken in Athens and Thessaloniki during Wednesday’s rallies and demonstrations for the 15-year anniversary of the fatal shooting of teenager Alexandros Grigoropoulos had been successful, minimising damage in the two city centres.

A total of 128 people were detained and 14 were then arrested in Athens, while 35 people were detained and 16 were arrested in Thessaloniki. In total, 163 people were detained and 30 arrested this year, compared to 54 individuals detained and nine arrested in 2022.

The same sources said that participation in the rallies and demonstrations held in Athens was higher compared with the previous years. Indicatively, roughly 9,000 individuals participated in the rallies and marches in Athens, while participation in Thessaloniki was roughly halved.

Finally, in terms of material damages, police said that these were minor and isolated.
