Police Continue Search for Suspect in Beating of Greek-Canadian in Crete

ATHENS – Police officers in Crete are searching for the perpetrators of the beating of the 49-year-old Greek-Canadian Emmanuel Kakoulakis, which took place a month ago in the center of Heraklion, although so far without results. At dawn on August 12, a major operation by the Greek police took place in Zoniana in Crete.

Information led the authorities to believe that Zoniana is the village of origin and residence of one of the two perpetrators who have already been identified. The operation did not bear fruit, however, as the 31-year-old alleged perpetrator is believed to have left Crete. This is the second attempt by the police to catch the 31-year-old in the area without success.

According to patris.gr, the operation involved special units of the Hellenic Police from almost all the police departments, including the participation of police special forces.

It is recalled that the incident of the beating took place when Kakoulakis, during a family vacation, was the victim of an attack by a group of locals, after making a simple remark. The attack was so violent that the Greek-Canadian had to undergo six hours of surgery, as he suffered severe injuries to his head and face and permanent damage to his right eye.

The 49-year-old expatriate originally from Anogeia has already testified to the Heraklion investigator, while from the beginning he had requested the assistance of the Justice Department. Despite hopes to the contrary, the perpetrators are still at large, which seems to have angered the victim’s family.

Kakoulakis’ lawyer Manolis Troulis has denounced the attitude of the police, pointing out that the delay in the administration of justice is unacceptable. At the same time, the wife of the victim has reportedly expressed her despair, highlighting the fear and sense of injustice that has overwhelmed their family.
