PM Mitsotakis Announces Emergency Levy on Natural Gas Power Producers to Combat High Electricity Prices

ATHENS – Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave an interview to SKAI TV on Tuesday evening, emphasizing that the government has decided to impose an emergency levy on natural gas power producers for the next two months. “We will use this revenue to alleviate electricity bills in August,” Mitsotakis stressed. “Given the current price trends, citizens would otherwise see a sharp increase in electricity prices in August.”

He explained that the spike in wholesale prices would directly impact consumer bills without this intervention. The levy will be imposed for two months, and the subsidy will initially cover August. Detailed announcements will be made on Wednesday by the Minister of Energy and Environment Theodoros Skylakakis, in a press conference.

Regarding inflation, Mitsotakis noted that it is a global and multifaceted issue, not just a Greek problem. He mentioned that there are signs of significant inflation reduction, which is a positive indication of price de-escalation.

Commenting the attack on Donald Trump, Mitsotakis described it as a very violent incident, emphasizing that “political violence has no place in our democracies. We should all take a lesson from this event and always remember that political dialogue must be civilized. The mentality that it’s either us or them, which unfortunately has also dominated Greek politics, has no place in Greek democracy nor in any Western liberal democracy,” added.
