Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
ATHENS – Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be in New York the week of September 22 in order to participate in the high-level meetings and ceremonies of the opening of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). Also traveling to New York is Foreign Minister Giorgos Gerapetritis.
The Prime Ministers’ schedule includes a speech at the UN General Assembly on September 26 and the UN Summit on the Future, meetings with heads of state such as Benjamin Netanyahu, Aleksandar Vučić, and others, as well as the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres. There will also be meetings with representatives of the Greek diaspora and investors. A meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is not currently included in the schedule, though it is considered certain that one will take place.
In his speech at the UN General Assembly Mitsotakis is expected, among other things, to make special mention of the fact that Greece will assume the position of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council next year, with its motto being: ‘Dialogue, Democracy, Diplomacy’.
The Greek Prime Minister will be one of four individuals honored with the Global Citizen award by the prominent American think tank, the Atlantic Council. According to the Atlantic Council, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will be honored “for his remarkable career in public service and the private sector, as well as his leadership of Greece and in transatlantic, European, and global affairs.”
Detailed schedule of the Prime Minister in New York:
• The Prime Minister will deliver his speech before the UN General Assembly on Thursday, September 26. He will make special mention of Greece assuming the position of a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council next year, and he will touch upon the major global geopolitical and technological challenges.
• Earlier, the Prime Minister will make two appearances at the UN Summit on the Future, on Sunday and Monday, September 22 and 23, respectively. The Summit on the Future is a platform that will address challenges such as geopolitical tensions, economic instability, human rights, digital governance, and threats to global peace.
• On Thursday, September 26, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will meet with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.
During his participation in the High-Level Week of the UN General Assembly, the Prime Minister will hold meetings with several world leaders, including: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (Wednesday, September 25), Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan (Wednesday, September 25), Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić (Thursday, September 26), Panamanian President José Raúl Molino (Wednesday, September 25), and Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti (Thursday, September 26).
Mitsotakis will also meet with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Bahrain Salman Bin Hamad Al Khalifa (Wednesday, September 25), the Crown Prince of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah (Sunday, September 22), as well as with the President of the Palestinian Authority Mahmoud Abbas (Tuesday, September 22).
Prime Minister Honored by Atlantic Council
On September 23, the Prime Minister will be one of the four individuals to be honored this year with the Global Citizen award, presented by the prominent American think tank, the Atlantic Council. Kyriakos Mitsotakis will deliver a brief speech upon receiving the award. The award will be presented to Kyriakos Mitsotakis by Pfizer Chairman and CEO Dr. Albert Bourla.
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Ghanaian President Nana Akufo-Addo, and South Korean entertainment pioneer Miky Lee will also be honored at a special ceremony on September 23 (7:00-9:00 PM).
“By shining a light on such remarkable individuals -– two men and two women from three continents – we hope to inspire others to emulate their contributions to a better world,” said Frederick Kempe, Atlantic Council president and CEO.
On Tuesday, September 24, at 2:00 PM, the Prime Minister will address a Greek-American community event co-hosted by major Greek-American organizations in Astoria. During the event, the Prime Minister will award prominent members of the Diaspora.
During his stay in New York, the Prime Minister will also meet with investors, where he will have the opportunity to present the new landscape shaped for the Greek economy by the recovery of investment-grade status, as well as the data showing that Greece has the second-highest growth rate in the European Union.
Additionally, as every year, the Prime Minister will meet with representatives of major Jewish organizations.
Gerapetritis Departs for NY Sept. 21
Foreign Minister Gerapetritis of Greece will depart for New York on September 21. His schedule includes more than 40 high-level meetings and contacts with foreign ministers from Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, Central and Latin America, as well as high-ranking officials of the UN and regional organisations, according to an announcement of the foreign ministry.
The Foreign Minister’s contacts will focus on global challenges, as well as regional crises, particularly in the Middle East, Ukraine, and Sub-Saharan Africa.
He will attend the Transatlantic Dinner organized by his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, in the presence of the foreign ministers of NATO and he will also participate in trilateral meetings of the foreign ministers of Greece-Cyprus-Egypt and Greece-Cyprus-Jordan. He will also attend a Ministerial Working Dinner for the Middle East and a Ministerial Meeting on the situation in Gaza.
