Plevris: Political Decisions on Personal Doctor System from Next Week

ATHENS – The health ministry will be ready to announce the political decisions that concern the institution of a personal doctor as of next week, Health Minister Thanos Plevris said at a conference on healthcare organised by the newspaper “Proto Thema” on Tuesday.

While doctors entering the system will be paid an average of 60,000 euros a year, he said, this would be based on the number of hours worked and subject to cross checking. He noted that there will also be incentives and penalties, such as paying a higher contribution to healthcare costs, to encourage patients to adopt the new system.

According to the minister, the introduction of ‘personal doctors’ will help solve chronic problems in primary and secondary healthcare, as well as curb the overprescribing of medication, while warning that “the solutions will not be pleasant” and that the more expensive medications must be reserved for those that truly need them.
