Pindar Damianos: We Promote Green Energy at Pindar Vineyards

November 26, 2020

PECONIC, NY – The dream of Pindar Vineyards founder Dr. Herodotus (Dan) Damianos, a great philanthropist and visionary doctor, is continued today by his children Pindar Damianos, Alexander Damianos, and Alethea Damianos-Conroy in the 500 picturesque acres in Peconic where they use green energy and produce food-friendly wines. Pindar and Green Logic Energy through the Backyard Wind Program have installed wind turbines and renewable energy programs that help reduce electricity costs, reduce the carbon footprint, and accelerate a clean energy economy on Long Island.

Growing 17 varieties of grapes, crafting them into some 23 varietals and proprietary blends, Pindar produces 70,000 cases of wine a year, making it the largest vineyard on Long Island. Their flagship winery is located on the North Fork of Long Island, in Peconic, while their Port Jefferson location features a full tasting bar and wine shop. Just beyond Port Jefferson, Pindar Vineyards has a great full-service wine bar and wine shop.

Pindar Vineyards also hosts wedding ceremonies and receptions, corporate functions, private group tastings, birthdays, anniversaries, and many other special occasions. There is even Yoga with Nikki.

Pindar Damianos spoke with The National Herald about the family business and about the industry during these difficult times.

TNH: What is the state of the business right now?

Pindar Damianos: Since March, we have seen an increase in the online sales of our wines, as well as an increase in the distribution business. Since June, our customers have had the opportunity to return to the tasting room for table service and wine sales, along with tastings. Given New York's safety standards, we have seen our customers return to a very safe environment.

TNH: How fast do you think the industry can recover?

PD: It will take time for the industry as a whole to recover, especially if we see a second wave of COVID this fall. The important thing is to keep the restaurants open as they serve Pindar wines on their menus.

TNH: Why do you love wine?

PD: I definitely love wine. This comes from my Greek culture, passed down from my father Dr. Herodotus Damianos. His love for wine became my passion as a young adult. Our wines at Pindar are food friendly. We make wines for everyone's palette. Red wines can be intense and full-bodied and white wines can be light-bodied. Our famous wines are Pindar 2019 Sunflower Chardonnay, 2019 Pindar Riesling, and the popular red Pythagoras blend.

TNH: What do you have to say to the Greek-American community?

PD: I would love for all of you to visit the winery at Pindar Vineyards. It's very nice.
