Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
Then a student at Michigan State, Shaylyn Sprague came to Greece to study under a school summer program, lured by ideas implanted by Percy Jackson books, especially the goddess Circe, a major character in the Odyssey.
She graduated in 2023 but remembers the siren song of Circe, which was the focus of her final project, a ceramic piece called Interwoven that explored the character’s perspective as a woman in Ancient Greek, said State News.
“My piece is going into certain points in Circe’s life where she had these really negative things happen to her,” Sprague said. “I want people to be able to look at this and understand her point of the story,” she added.
Her project is among artworks made by the students who also studied in Greece, displayed in the MSU Union Gallery, an exhibit whose theme focuses on the students’ perspectives on Greek history and culture. For Sprague, this meant using a woodland style of Native American art to combine her past and present experiences.
