ATHENS – A backlash against Mykonos for being overcrowded, overpriced, gouging tourists and reports it’s being taken over by organized crime development has seen foreign arrivals dropping although it remains popular with celebrities.

The trend is also seen being accelerated by the island’s infrastructure being strained by having too many visitors, said Birmingham Live, a United Kingdom news site that said international air traffic to the island is falling.

Tourism groups have also blamed “particularly high prices and the low value-for-money,” the report said, adding that in 2023 traffic to Mykonos airport fell by 5.9 percent to 1.12 million tourists from from 1.19 million in 2022 – which was a down year in the tail end of COVID-19 pandemic health restrictions.

For this summer, airlines have scheduled 5.8 percent fewer seats on their flights to Mykonos, according to the Airdata tracker data of the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE) the report said.
