ATHENS – Over 13 tons of garbage were collected by 6,500 volunteers from Greek beaches and the seabed in 145 cleaning operations, HELMEPA (Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association) announced on Friday. The organisation had coordinated the beach clean-ups for 29th year in Greece, in the context of the International Beach Cleaning Volunteer Day.

Over 73 km of the Greek coastline were cleaned and volunteer divers collected 1.5 tons of garbage from the seabed.

Cigarette butts were once again the most numerous type of garbage collected, followed by disposable plastic, plastic bottles and straws. Glass bottles, paper, plastic bags and styrofoam were also among the most frequently found items of refuse on beaches.
