There is No Time to Waste

Today, the world finds itself in an unprecedented situation, or at least, a situation that we face only once every hundred years.

The world we knew is fighting for survival, without being able to defend itself. It fights against a virus that it does not see. Hordes of invisible, tiny but deadly viruses are attacking us with increasing speed, without being able to neutralize them.

Of course, as you know, Dr. Albert Bourlas, the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Pfizer, announced the discovery of a vaccine, which seems to have a very high rate of effectiveness: 90%.

And yet, it will be a few more months before it is put on the market.

What do we do until then?

In America, we now have approximately 150,000 new cases each day. A little over a week ago we had … 100,000. Over the two weeks we have set a new record for the number of cases every day.

The Coronavirus killed 1,000 people a day last week. And it is not limited to one city or state. It is across the country.

In Greece, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is fighting, together with scientists, to control the spread of the virus. Unfortunately, it seems that the people, especially the youth, have relaxed after the Greek government’s first successful response to the virus. Or rather, they have become exhausted.

And of course the irresponsible attitude of the political opposition does not help.

So in America, we are on the verge of another lockdown.

This is already being discussed in New York.

We face a tragic dilemma – there is a cliff in front of us and a raging river behind us. On the one hand, the virus threatens our lives and on the other, economic collapse confronts us with dangers of starvation, homelessness and despair.

Ask the millions who work in restaurants, bars, etc. Ask the taxi drivers. How will they live? How will they take care of their families?

So there is no room for wasted time. We can't wait for President Joe Biden to be sworn in on January 20th.

Trump, Biden, the leadership of Congress, must all work together to tackle this great national crisis and provide a second generous stimulus package to assist employees and small businesses.

This issue is not political. It is national.

Fortunately, something is changing: The President-Elect is "begging" us to wear masks and to practice social distancing.

These two actions are the only weapons we have against the Coronavirus today. Let's use them to the best of our abilities.

Before we become a part of the statistics that measure the number of virus cases - or, God forbid - the number of the dead.
