FALMOUTH, MA – The police in Falmouth have identified the victim in an accident involving a car plunging into the ocean on February 20, NBC10 Boston reported.
The Holy Assumption Orthodox Church in Marblehead, Ohio that’s served Eastern European immigrants for generations, including Greek Catholics, on April 1 will receive a commemorative plaque from the Ottawa County Historical Society.
It’s the oldest Orthodox church in Ohio and one of the 15 self-governing Eastern Orthodox Churches worldwide, said the Sandusky Register, noting the Greek Catholic Church of the Dormition (Assumption) of Mary was founded in 1897.
With immigrants moving from Eastern Europe to Marblehead, many Carpatho-Russian Greek Catholics sought to return to the Eastern Orthodox Church, coinciding with an Orthodoxy movement in Europe and North America. The parish is now part of the Orthodox Church in America (OCA).
A Greek-Catholic priest, Father Alexis Toth, led the Orthodoxy movement in America due to his dislike of the Roman Catholic hierarchy, which inspired him to create his parish in Minneapolis, Minnesota, under the rule of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow, the church’s website said.
“That event became the catalyst for many other Greek Catholic parishes to return to the Orthodox Faith,” the report said, adding a contrast in beliefs caused a division among church leaders where some left the Orthodox Church and returned to the Greek Catholic Church, known as Unia, that are part of the Roman Catholic Church.
