NEW YORK – In an exclusive Zoom interview on July 26, Eraklis A. Diamataris, Co-Editor and Publisher of The National Herald, sat down with New York City Mayor Eric Adams to discuss a range of issues pertinent to the Greek-American community. The conversation covered support for small businesses, cultural preservation, immigration, education, and community relations.

Support for Small Businesses

Mayor Adams highlighted the significant strides his administration has made in supporting small businesses across the city. He noted that more small businesses are opening than ever before, a testament to the robust initiatives aimed at job creation. Recognizing the Greek-American community’s notable presence in the hospitality industry, particularly through diners, Adams praised their contributions to the city’s economic fabric. He emphasized the city’s efforts to ensure these businesses continue to thrive, contributing to New York’s diverse economy.

Cultural Preservation and Promotion

The importance of preserving Greek culture, language, and heritage was a focal point of the discussion. Mayor Adams acknowledged the Greek-American community as a “force” within the educational sector of the city. He lauded their dedication to maintaining cultural traditions and emphasized the city’s commitment to supporting bilingual education. Adams confirmed that recent budget negotiations have indeed helped preserve bilingual courses in New York City’s public schools, a vital resource for Greek-American families.

Immigration and Community Services

Addressing the city’s policies on immigration, Mayor Adams expressed strong support for granting work visas to talented Greeks seeking opportunities in New York. He highlighted the potential benefits such a policy could bring, including expertise in local infrastructure projects and economic stimulation. Adams also discussed the ongoing migrant crisis, criticizing the federal government’s lack of support. He advocated for temporary work visas for migrants and asylum seekers, allowing them to contribute to the economy immediately.

Education and Youth Programs

Mayor Adams reiterated his administration’s focus on the educational needs of Greek-American families. He highlighted the city’s support for bilingual education and programs that cater to the youth, ensuring that Greek-American children receive quality education while maintaining their cultural heritage. The preservation of bilingual courses in public schools was a notable achievement, ensuring that the next generation remains connected to their roots.

Community Relations

When asked about his relationship with the Greek-American community, Mayor Adams expressed deep admiration and long-standing support. He recounted his history as a staunch ally of the Greek and Cypriot American communities, dating back to his days as Brooklyn Borough President. Adams highlighted the historical bond between the African American and Greek American communities, referencing Archbishop Iakovos’ march with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Selma, Alabama, in 1965 as a symbol of solidarity.

Regarding his relations with the Turkish community, Adams emphasized his role as mayor of all New Yorkers. He condemned any attempts by bad-faith actors to sow discord between communities. He dismissed media claims of inflated relations with the Turkish government, reaffirming his commitment to fostering unity among all New Yorkers. Adams concluded by praising The National Herald’s commitment to factual reporting, appreciating the publication’s balanced coverage.
