No Kiss: UK Gay Tourists in Greece Advised Not To Show Public Affection

The recent legalization of same-sex marriage doesn’t mean that Greece has shed itself of taboos around the LGBTQ+ community, the United Kingdom’s Foreign Office indicated in advising them not to show affection in public in some places.

In an update to its Foreign travel advice website, the passage for travelers to Greece noted that same-sex sexual relations are legal in Greece and the age of consent is 15 for both the same and opposite sex.

And while it was said that transgender people are able to change their legal gender and that anti-discrimination and hate speech laws apply to gender identity that in sone areas people frown upon open displays of sexual activity, said Pink News.

“Public attitudes towards same-sex sexual activity vary throughout the country; showing affection in public by same-sex couples may be frowned upon, especially in rural areas,” the site said.

“Attitudes are generally much more welcoming in Athens and on many Greek islands, particularly on Lesvos, Mykonos and Skiathos. See our information and advice page for the LGBT+ community before you travel,” was the advice.

“A gay couple made history with the first same-sex wedding in Greece in March, two 21-year-old trans people were allegedly chased and attacked by a mob of people abusing them with homophobic slurs and throwing bottles at them,” said Pink News.

The UK message said too that despite the legalization of gay marriage that Greece remains divided over it although since it was passed there haven’t been reports of widespread violence against the LGBTQ+ community.
