N.Y.’s Pier 72 Another Restaurant Casualty of COVID-19

November 21, 2020

For 41 years, Pier 72 has been a favorite staple in New York City at West 72nd St. and West End Avenue but COVID-19 restrictions limiting inside dining have ended its run.

It will close the end of November after owner Jimmy Papalabros said he was unable to work out a new lease in the building, which is a co-operative, although neighbors rallied around him.

Georgia Fotiadis, who worked there since its opening in 1979, told West Side Rag that, “I grew up and grew old in there,” and that it was just unable to keep going because of the big drop in customers. “It’s very hard when you’re only allowed 25 percent customers inside — and the customers don’t want to come inside! They’re afraid and I understand it. Jimmy decided it wasn’t worth it.”

Papalabros has owned Pier 72 since 1979. “Even if he was here, he wouldn’t talk,” she said. “He’s too down.”

Lisa Sharkey wrote to the site of her love for the place. “To lose the Pier 72 will leave broken hearts and an empty hole in this neighborhood that is already suffering so much.”
