MT. ATHOS — The all-male monastic community of Mt. Athos will be powered by photovoltaic panels, according to a decision signed off on Wednesday by Governor of Central Greece Apostolos Tzitzikostas.
Monasteries of the community in northern Greece have been using petrol-based power generators, while they also burn wood for electricity production, the governor pointed out, as the community was never connected to the national power network. Each monastery has its own power supply but this creates many problems, he added.
Photovoltaic (or solar) panels will cover of Mt. Athos' energy needs and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, he underlined.
Mt. Athos has been designated as a Natura 2000 protected zone and is also included in the list of UNESCO monuments.
