More Than 1,000 Greek Beach Takeovers Reported On MyCoast App, Phone

July 9, 2024

ATHENS – Another more than 1,000 complaints about private businesses violating how much public beach space they can use – itself unconstitutional in Greece – were sent through the new MyCoast app and by phone to the Finance Ministry.

That was in just five days and came after the ministry said it had gotten 8,911 complaints but no report whether luxury resorts that are taking over public beaches were being inspected or had complaints issued against them.

The new batch of complaints led to inspections of only 14 beaches though where it was said multiple violations were found, the government allowing only 50 percent of beach space to be occupied and access required for the public.

The ministry said it issued fines totaling 350,000 euros ($378,674) over zoning violations and shut down three businesses that didn’t have leases although those aren’t allowed under the Constitution.

The Ministry said that inspections would be stepped up over the summer, including with the use of drones to monitor beaches in the Cyclades and Dodecanese islands although luxury resorts post photos showing they are consuming beaches.

None of the businesses fined or shut were named and a 2023 beach takeover protest that began on some islands has fizzled out with no reports of any demonstrations this year.
