Mob Assaults Police Car Carrying Child Molester Confessed Killing Niece

PYRGOS, Greece – A 37-year-old convicted child molester who reportedly confessed to murdering his 11-year-old niece with a screwdriver also allegedly said he tried to rape her before killing her and throwing her body in some reeds and going home to sleep.

The man, a Roma, wasn’t identified in keeping with Greek privacy laws but his photo was widely shown on media sites and an angry crowd attacked a police car in Pyrgos where he was being taken to court before it was forced to leave.

Angry relatives of the victim rushed the police car, pounding on it while others threw objects at the vehicle, the driver turning on the siren and pulling away before the suspect could be reached.

He is a cousin to the girl’s mother and best man of her and her husband and was giving her a ride from her house in the seaside village of Myrtia to her grandfather’s when he allegedly tried to rape her, said Proto Thema and other news sites.

The girl’s body was discovered later in a field after her parents reported her missing and an Amber Alert was issued and a medical examiner was called to determine whether she had been sexually assaulted before being killed.

He was on release from prison pending his appeal of a conviction for raping a minor in 2017 on the Ionian island of Zakynthos, the girl reported to be a cousin of the 11-year-old’s father. It wasn’t said why he was trusted to drive the latest victim.

State broadcaster ERT said that while he was sentenced to nine years’ imprisonment, he was released on the condition that all he had to do was report to his local police station twice a month.

Police said he took the girl, whose name was given only as Vasiliki, to a remote area and killed her. A surveillance camera showed her getting into the car with the man and reports said she had defensive wounds and apparently tried to escape.

Reports said he admitted to police he wanted to have intercourse with her but she refused and said she would tell her parents, which led him to attack her with a screwdriver, stabbing her in the chest and back.

“I suggested that we have intercourse. She reacted and refused. She said she would tell her parents and I killed her with the screwdriver I had in the car,” he allegedly claimed, said Proto Thema.

The paper said he then went home and went to bed as if nothing had happened, and the next day went to work as normal and began to pretend that he was anxious about the fate of his niece.

What led to the arrest, the report said, was police locating the video footage showing the girl coming out of his house and getting into the car near the house of the man’s grandfather, no report whether her family reported her missing.

The report said the man was interrogated and confessed but that the murder weapon hasn’t been found. The incident brought fury when the man was taken to the court and has led to an investigation into why he was released.

He had been sentenced to nine years in jail after being convicted by a court on the island of Zakynthos for the rape of a 14-year-old girl. In 2019, the then ruling Radical Left SYRIZA passed laws making rape a misdemeanor before revising it.

Supreme Court President Ioanna Klapa called for a review of the actions of three judges who let the convicted child molester be released, with another condition he couldn’t leave the country although Roma move about freely.
