ATHENS — Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday agreed to a proposal by Movement for Change (KINAL) leader Fofi Gennimata, who requested a joint meeting of Parliament's Standing Committee on Economic Affairs, the Permanent Special Committee on Environmental Protection and the Special Standing Committee for European Affairs to discuss a new climate law.
As Gennimata said, the aim of the meeting is the formation of a multipartisan consensus so that the law can be passed with the "widest possible parliamentary majority."
In reply to Gennimata's letter, Mitsotakis agreed to her request and said that he has asked Environment and Energy Minister Kostas Skrekas to ask for a joint meeting of the above committees to be convened as soon as possible.
"Our aim is for the new draft law to be posted for public consultation in mid-June, so that through a broad cross-party consensus we can organise our transition to a climate-neutral economy," Mitsotakis said in his letter.
Parliament President Kostas Tasoulas has set a date for the joint meeting of the committees on Tuesday, May 18.
