The coveted exotic beauty of Tunisia is revealed by the 2nd episode of our Mission…To Tunisia – A TNH Documentary. Through Famous Travel we entered the depths of the Sahara desert, encountering bazaars, oases, adventure, adrenaline and… intense weather conditions!
The vast Sahara Desert takes up 40 percent of the entire country! Tunisia is a country full of history, captivating landscapes, and intense contrasts, but it also has very hospitable people whose poverty has not managed to deprive them of their kindness, their smiles, and their positive energy!
We owe a big thank you to the 25 Greek friends, each of them unique and friendly, with whom we travelled together in the group as they effortlessly integrated into our Mission:
the daring Anthea and her husband, the ‘explosive’ Vanya, the enthusiastic Tessie, sweet Ada, smiling Eftichia, and the adaptable Mr. Peter…
Matmata, the village of the Bedouins where several movies, including Star Wars, have been filmed, provides a vivid picture for those who want to experience the traditional life of a Bedouin family that lives covertly in our time as…troglodytes! They welcomed us to their home and guided us through their ‘cinematic life from another era’ with the traditional cave dwellings and the barren landscape of steep cliffs and small mountains that captivate the eyes of tourists.
The entire history of the nomadic tribes of the desert passed by our eyes as by magic…Douz being considered the ‘Gateway of the Desert’!
None of us could have imagined how much our adrenaline would be pumping when the windstorm ‘knocked on the door’ of our ‘desert tour with the pigs’!
And then the romantic camel ride on the sand dunes of the vast desert welcomed our day with a different kind of magic!

Sousse, the third largest city in Tunisia and one of the most important commercial ports in the Mediterranean was fascinating. The city’s fortress (Ribat of Sousse) built in the late 8th century to be used by both the Arabs and Byzantines to defend the city, was founded by the Phoenicians in the 11th century BC, and was known to the ancient Greeks by the names of Adroumitos, Adrimis, and Adramitos. The city subsequently passed into the sphere of influence of Carthage and then the Roman and Arab empires, with the city’s medina having been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988.
It is worth mentioning that Hamamet impressed us, especially when walking through the atmospheric and picturesque alleys with the colorful and impressive wooden doors…we discovered with the help of a resident the history and the meanings of each door with respect to its colors, engravings…and the…bells!
In Tunisia one can admire the harmonious way in which Arab and Mediterranean cultural and architectural elements coexist!

We bade farewell to beautiful Tunisia through the city that connects its history with ours, with the history of the Ancient Greeks…Ancient Carthage! It is not by chance that Aristotle considered it to possess one of the best political organizations in the world, along with those of the Greek city-states of Athens, Sparta, Ancient Marseilles, and Crete.
Who knows after all…whether what unites us or divides us, are just the magical landscapes of exploration and discovery for those who travel, making us all eternal companions of a life we all want to share!
Zina Koutselini’s TV show ‘Truths with Zina’ which is broadcast on STAR, welcomed us back in the studio with enthusiasm along with everything we experienced during our filming, becoming a companion of our travels around Greece and the world to every destination of our MISSION! After all…MISSION and TRUTHS… are two concepts that look into the eyes of the viewer with respect, seeking, optimism, and transparency!
