Minister: Greece Not Considering New Migrant Facilities in Evros

February 9, 2021

ATHENS — The government has no plans for new migrant hosting facilities in Evros, Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi said on Tuesday.

"It is clear that the national strategy for Evros, which is for 'no new facility and no permanent residence of refugees and migrants in Thrace' has not changed and will never change," he added, following a meeting with the Deputy Regional Governor of Evros Dimitris Petrovic at the Prefecture of Alexandroupolis, whom he visited together with Deputy Interior Minister Stelios Petsas.

Mitarachi clarified that the security of Evros and its inhabitants is the only priority of the government, emphasising that the issues of the remote prefecture are a priority for Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The two ministers will wrap up their two-day visit to the prefecture of Evros on Tuesday. Petsas will visit settlements of the municipality of Alexandroupolis affected by the recent floods, while Mitarachi will hold a press conference.
