Migrant Quarantine Hotel in Greece Locked Again Over COVID-19 Cases

While Greece’s lockdown aimed at preventing the spread of the COVID-19 Coronavirus is gradually being lifted, it’s being tightened at a migrant quarantine hotel in the southern Peloponnese town of Kranidi after three more cases emerged.

The only people who will be allowed in the hotel are its employees, healthcare professionals and police and military officials after results from a medical unit of the National Public Health Organization (EODY) found the cases among 125 tested.

The facility was also visited by officials from the Migration Policy Ministry, said Kathimerini, the hotel put in quarantine on April 21 after 153 people tested positive for the virus. The facility holds 470 migrants and refugees who all come from sub-Saharan Africa and is being rented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM.)

There have been lingering cases as well in a Roma populated area in central Greece but the virus didn’t spread in detention centers and camps on five Eastern Aegean islands holding more than 38,000 refugees and migrants for unknown reasons as they are overcrowded and aids groups said are unsanitary and unfit for humans.
