Memorandum for Measures to Protect Greece’s Archaeological Sites Updated

December 1, 2023

ATHENS – The renewal of the Memorandum of Cooperation for the measures to protect the archaeological sites from the risk of fires in the context of climate change was signed on Friday by Culture Minister Lina Mendoni and Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Vassilis Kikilias, as stated in a joint statement of the two ministries.

From 2021, the two ministries are working closely with joint working groups to strengthen civil protection plans in the light of natural hazards and extreme phenomena that are occurring due to climate change. So far, in more than 30 archaeological sites, projects and actions have been launched related to additional fire protection measures, both for outdoor areas and for building infrastructure, for conducting fire drills and training staff, as well as for examining studies and either preparing or revising civil defence plans.

The new memorandum focuses on protecting archaeological sites from the risk of fire, enriching the framework of cooperation already established between the two ministries for the specific issues.
