KOS, GREECE – Marmari Beach in Kos, Greece, has been recognized as having the whitest sand in Europe, according to a recent study that analyzed over 200 beaches worldwide. The study, conducted by luxury villa travel agents CV Villas, used Google Maps images and color analysis theory to determine the beaches with the whitest sands on the planet.
Marmari Beach ranked impressively, with its sand color just 6.5 points off the purest white shade in the world, placing it among the top beaches globally. This picturesque Greek beach is located in the serene resort town of Marmari, where its white sands meet the crystal-clear waters of the Aegean Sea.
While Tulum Beach in Mexico claimed the top spot for the whitest sand overall, the rankings showed a strong European presence, with half of the top 30 beaches located on the continent. Greece’s Marmari Beach stood out as Europe’s finest, surpassing other well-known destinations.
The British newspaper Independent highlighted the study’s findings, noting that although many might associate pristine white beaches with tropical climates, European shores, including those in Greece, Italy, and Spain, dominated the rankings.
In the global competition for the whitest sands, Spain led the way with the most entries in the top 30, securing six spots. Other European beaches making the top ten included Tropea Beach in Italy and Platja de Muro in Mallorca.
The study also noted that while English beaches did not feature prominently, Scotland’s Luskentyre Beach managed to tie for 18th place. The North American region took eight spots in the top 30, while three beaches in Thailand represented Asia. Only one beach from Oceania, Australia’s Whitehaven Beach, made it into the rankings, coming in at 25th place.
