The messages of the elections in Greece are many and important.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis scored a historic victory and imposed himself on the country’s political system like few prime ministers in Greek history.
It is also important that Greece has a stable government for the next four years, since with the help of the electoral system under which the elections were held, Mitsotakis has ‘autonomy’, not requiring a coalition partner.
But that is not all.
Mitsotakis has contributed to an almost revolutionary shift in Greece’s electorate from the post-civil war leftist ideological orientation to pragmatism. In other words, they seek a leadership whose main qualities are competence and knowledge of international conditions and currents of thought, and one that is capable of safeguarding it from the challenges it faces from Turkey – and one that also has a real vision for the country.
On the other hand, and even more importantly, these elections also gave rise to a neo-Nazi movement, the ‘Spartans’, which could, especially if the government stumbles, snowball and gain a large political base.
The mere fact that the party that is supported by Ilias Kasidiaris, the Golden Dawn henchman who is in prison – or perhaps as a result of this fact – received such a high percentage of the vote, whereas a few days ago it was almost unknown, says a lot.
Of course, the percentage obtained by the far-right ‘Niki’ religious party is also worrying.
However, the fact that the KKE increased its votes by 100,000 since the 2019 elections is not even discussed. I find it hard to think of another country in the world with a similar record.
In any case, it is clear that the centre-left is in significant retreat in Greece, with SYRIZA sinking and PASOK likely to take its place.
Now, as far as the members who make up the new government are concerned, apart from the fact that again, unfortunately, they did not establish a Ministry of Hellenism Abroad, we should give them a grace period before making any judgments.
However, some choices, and the failure to appoint some successful party members to ministries, are a cause for concern.
An exception is the appointment of Alexandra Papadopoulou, Greece’s previously successful ambassador to Washington, as Deputy Foreign Minister. It would be hard for the Prime Minister to find a more competent, experienced person who knows this ministry well, which, it should be noted, suffered during the Dendias years, and who is more committed to the Prime Minister than Ms. Papadopoulou.
And whatever can be said about Lina Mendoni would be an understatement. The Prime Minister’s decision to keep her in her post is excellent.
The political bottom line is that the real power was previously concentrated in the Maximos Mansion – the Prime Minister’s residence – and now ever more is being transferred there with the redistribution of responsibilities in the cabinet and the addition of Stavros Papastavrou and Makis Voridis as Ministers of State.
