Luxury Yacht Ran Aground, Took on Water, off the Coast of Kefalonia

August 3, 2024

ATHENS – The Maltese-flagged luxury yacht ‘Ethos’ took on water after running aground while sailing in the Paleokaravo bay of Kefalonia, Protothema.gr reported.

One of the crew members had apparently left a side door open, through which the yacht took on water as the weather turned and none of the crew embers had a chance to notice it.

The security systems were working, Protothema.gr reported, noting that the yacht ran aground in Evretis Bay, where it anchored.

The five tourists on board disembarked safely as did the five crew members belonging to the yacht’s hotel staff.

In the meantime, the water is being bailed out of the yacht with external help.

A private boat is at the scene with two harbor guards monitoring the operation, while a diver is expected to inspect the reefs.

The incident is being investigated to determine the cause.

Protothema.gr posted video of the “off-balance” luxury yacht which is rented out in the high season at about $230,000 a week, according to a report in the Daily Mail.

The video is available on YouTube: https://shorturl.at/7hl6J.

“The stunning yacht, built in 2014, is available for private charter, inviting guests to enjoy a ‘warm and welcoming’ atmosphere as they soak up the Greek sun,” the Daily Mail reported, adding that “the vessel boasts room for 12 guests and nine staff, with 12 beds on board divided between a master suite and two VIP cabins.”

“A ‘beach club,’ sauna and gym are built in for guests to unwind in peace on their holidays,” the Daily Mail reported, noting that “this comes at a cost of £150,000 [about $192,000] a week – plus expenses – up to £180,000 [about $230,000] in high season.”
