You could find Greek diners in just about any kind of design over the years, from sleek, shiny streamliners to holes in the wall in cities, but Dimitrios Vagenas’ in Grand Prairie, Texas might be the only one in a shipping container.
Vagenas opened his restaurant, My Kuzina – meaning ‘My Kitchen’ in Greek – earlier this year after he was furloughed from his chef job with Omni, said WFAA in a report.
He was born and raised in Greece and moved to the United States in 2013 with dreams of opening his own restaurant, an idea he made happen during the lingering COVID-19 pandemic, taking his big chance.
He found where he wanted it to be, in an unused shipping container turned kitchen on the same parcel of land that houses Fire House Gastro Park and told the station he just couldn’t pass it up – container outside but Greek food inside – and he said his menu has traditional Greek fare, without having to go to Greece to taste it. “It’s a very cheap way to try authentic Greek food,” he joked. My Kuzina serves soups, salads, desserts, and, of course, souvlaki.
