London: The Crown Jewel of Foodies’ Top-Rated European Cities

It seems England’s largest and most iconic has once again earned the nickname, “The Foodie Capital.” According to lifestyle magazine Dailybase, London ranks #1 of 193 European cities, garnering the most 5-star restaurant reviews.

The Dutch magazine analyzed Tripadvisor data, finding 2,906 5-star reviews for restaurants, cafés, bars, and pubs within London. Research firm Resonance agrees. Their annual Europe’s Best Cities Report also crowns Old Smoke as the top city on the continent in several areas, evaluated by liability, lovability and prosperity. The city also ranked first in Europe for cities with the biggest international traveler spend in 2022.

The city is rich with historical sites and has been an international hub for generations. Its place at the epicenter of many other cultures and peoples allows for unique fusions of different cuisines.

But it’s far from the only culinary stronghold in Europe.

The Crown Jewel Herself: London

Despite America’s reputation as a melting pot, London has held that honor for several hundred years longer, going back to Roman times. Then called Londinium, the thriving port city was home to merchants and artisans and, as a strategic hub for several Roman supply routes, became a temporary way station for traders.

Unique food fusions naturally occur between its longstanding history with colonization and global trade. The city is unique in its variety of eateries. Pubs and taverns serve full meals here, whereas in other countries, they often serve light bites or appetizers.

London Town is home to more than fusion foods, too. Traditional Chinese, Indian, and other Asian meals are found here thanks to the significant communities of these cultures.

Renowned for its traditional pub culture, you’ll find homemade pies, roast dinners, and many Michelin-starred restaurants to tantalize your taste buds. This makes it the perfect destination for your next city break.

A City of Glittering Appeal: Paris

Although London’s status as crown jewel in the foodie crown remains uncontested, Paris has its own shine. As the city of glittering lights, it’s known for more than its sights. The wine, pastries, and charcuterie of France are famous.

The French capital is closely followed in second place, with 2,898 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor for its eateries. Foodies are clearly enjoying Paris’s culinary specialties, such as escargot and entrecôte, a premium steak cut to relish with chips in top-rated French bistros and cafés.

Where London offers a place for up-and-coming fusions, Paris remains the premiere school of fine dining and culinary expertise. As the source of the Michelin-star rating system, this city’s second spot is natural.

Paris’s spotlight on top-quality cuisine makes it home to many aspiring chefs. Foodies benefit from decades of tradition, paired with these cooks’ desire to innovate.

Cava in Catalan: Barcelona

Spain’s cuisine scene includes plenty of delightful wines and refreshing fare. Seated in the Catalan region of Spain — home to the Spanish champagne cava — Barcelona offers many bubbly treats.

Although further north than Andalusia, its temperate weather is reminiscent of the coast. Milder weather creates a need for cool, refreshing drinks. Aside from cava, vermouth is popular on the tips of foodies’ tongues.

The lively city of Barcelona takes the third spot, with 1,475 5-star Tripadvisor reviews for its restaurants, cafés, and bars. Popular for its exciting nightlife, this Spanish city will wow foodies with its tapas, which include patatas bravas, potato cubes in a spicy tomato sauce, and the classic rice dish paella.

Europe: Rich in Culture and Cuisine

London’s top spot may surprise some, as it ranked higher than Paris or Rome. Yet foodies crave more than tradition. They desire new and exciting, unconventional dining experiences.

Daniël de Voer, the Chief Editor of Dailybase, says, “Discovering the best cities in Europe for foodies, whether this be fine dining experiences, local cafés or quirky bars, is not only fascinating but could inspire your next travel destination.”

The diversity and depth of European foods attracts many. Few people travel to a city for its food, yet these top European cities also include history and cultural attractions. Different regions favor different spices, meats, grains, and greens. This variance accounts for thrilling flavors.

London: A Food Lover’s Paradise

Traditional English foods, combined with homemade Asian cuisines, account for much of London’s culinary tapestry. This pairing works well with the city’s social scene, too. Pubs, taverns, and social clubs are hangout spots where friends gather for a good drink and tasty grub.

Iconic food markets such as Borough Market and Camden Market create more opportunities for innovative dishes. The added influence of multiculturalism on London’s food culture results in many diverse food options.

The richness and diversity of European cuisine draw travelers from around the world. Enjoying local food allows tourists to feel more at home. Connecting with locals over cuisine enhances the experience and allows visitors to take some of their trip ‘home’ by learning new recipes.

As a major travel hub, London is a top destination for food lovers. Don’t let the trip stop there. Make it a starting point for a new journey into new culinary delights.
