KINAL Will Vote for Bill to Extend Territorial Waters in Ionian Sea

January 20, 2021

ATHENS — Οpposition Movement for Change (KINAL) leader Fofi Gennimata on Wednesday said that her party will support the bill on the extension of Greece's territorial waters to 12 nautical miles in the Ionian Sea but also accused the government of lacking a comprehensive national strategy and pointed out some traps in the imminent exploratory talks with Turkey that will begin on January 25.

She said that the extension of the territorial waters is a positive development and her party will vote for the bill "but it should also include the simultaneous extension south and east of Crete," while she asked Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to commit to a specific time frame.

Gennimata said the resumption of Greek-Turkish exploratory talks was a positive development but stressed that these must be exclusively confined to the issue of delineating the continental shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone between the two countries. "Exploratory talks should not be confused with negotiations," she added.

ANKARA – Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday, May 23 at a press conference following a cabinet meeting that he would cease talking to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and cancel a key meeting between their two countries, as he accused the Greek leader of antagonistic behavior against Turkey, the Associated Press reported.
