Kifissia Home Invasion, Shooting, Spikes More Greece Violence Fears

April 3, 2018

ATHENS – The shooting of a prominent businessman in his home in a wealthy Athens area and an 88-year-old man firing a shotgun at two home invaders are more examples of how violence is out of control in the capital, major rival New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis said.

The homeowner in Kifissia was seriously wounded by two masked robbers with reports saying the residence had likely been cased and that there were no cameras nor alarms and that two dogs were fed tranquilizers.

That became a lead story on Greek television following the incident in which the elderly man shot at two home invaders and is facing charges for doing so even while trying to defend himself.

According to initial reports, the two men broke into the businessman’s home just after 5 a.m., awoke him and threatened him with a gun, said Kathimerini. When he resisted there was a scuffle and he was hit on the head before being shot twice in the back.

According to reports, the entrepreneur’s wife and two children had been in the house at the time of the attack but were not harmed.

There have been dozens of incidents of violence around the city, many of them by anarchist groups on rampages against the ruling Radical Left SYRIZA which ironically is riddled with their sympathizers as well as those even defending terrorists.

Mitsotakis has blamed Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and his party for condoning and even implicitly encouraging the violence by doing little to stop it and criticism was heaped anew when Alternate Public Order and Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas glibly responded over the Glyfada home invasion that society is “no paradise.”

Toskas also criticized the elderly homeowner for defending his property and himself in the well-to-do Glyfada area, for which he’s facing charges of felony intent to commit bodily harm and may face a court trial. Toskas said citizens cannot take the law into their own hands or “we’ll become like the far west,” the business newspaper Naftemporiki reported.

Mitsotakis lashed out that, |A problem with crime has always existed. Over the recent period, however, it has reached a boiling point … the government bears enormous responsibility,” over the troubles.
He blamed the spike in violence on the coalition government, which includes the pro-austerity, marginal, jingoistic allegedly law-and-order Independent Greeks (ANEL) led by Defense Minister Panos Kammenos for passing a law emptying prisons, with Mitsotakis saying “hundreds of felons were released” to commit more crimes.

Mitsotakis also noted the elimination of motorcycle mounted quick release police units and cutbacks in neighborhood patrols and said anarchists and anti-establishment groups who are the darling of some in SYRIZA are being allowed to run amok and hide in universities where there is asylum against police.

For Hellenes and Philhellenes, there are a variety places, sentiments, and ideas that draw them to different parts of the Hellenic world.
