Kasselakis Charges Homophobic Slurs After Wedding List Site Posted

ATHENS – Greek-American businessman Stefanos Kasselakis said publication of a site set up for wedding gifts for his marriage in Greece to his spouse – they were wed in the United States – brought homophobic slurs he blamed on the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

Kasselakis married American nurse Tyler McBeth before Mitsotakis pushed legislation through Parliament allowing same-sex marriage but the Leftist leader still said the Premier instigated followers over anti-gay comments.

Kasselakis and McBeth are going to have a ceremony in Chania on Crete, at the end of August, and on the honeyfund.com site there are boxes for gifts beginning at $100 and up to $2500 or a category of “other” for cash wedding gifts.

It states: “Help us create our dream honeymoon experience,” although in his required wealth declaration statement Kasselakis said his 2023 income was $2,067,139.00, which drew criticism about his Leftist credentials.

Social media comments, said Proto Thema, led SYRIZA sources not named to say that, “This is about the Wedding Gift (as for example in Greece happens with envelopes or deposits in bank accounts) and not a honeymoon.”

They said that, “It is customary in America for those who wish to deposit money in lieu of a gift on digital platforms, which also operate publicly. In fact, the amount collected is publicly listed at the end for transparency.”

Meta Vice President John Allen Thomas, who accompanied Kasselakis on a visit to the Greek Parliament, wrote: “Tyler, Stefanos – We hope this gift will help you find a few moments where politics is not the main topic of conversation, unless of course you are discussing the best beaches. Congratulations! Think of this as a small contribution to your personal happiness, Stefanos. We’re sure this will have bipartisan support from you and Tyler! We hope your honeymoon is filled with “election triumphs” of relaxation, adventure and joy. Love, John Allen & Adam.”

The openly gay married couple earlier put out an invitation for friends, family and loved ones for the ceremony and following events from Aug. 28-31. “We are so excited to invite all of you to one of our favorite places to celebrate this special day!” the couple’s online invitation reads.

Kasselakis said he and his spouse have been the victims of homophobic slurs over the list and he blamed Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and the ruling New Democracy Conservatives for instigating them.

Kasselakis said the list was put on a pro-government site and that the comments published under the story were by “ND trolls” who “cursed and slandered us.” One of the comments said, “Die and burn in hell… commies.”

“The publishing [of the list] and readiness of the paid trolls was so well orchestrated by Maximos Mansion that the fact is beyond us. I hold Mr. Mitsotakis solely responsible for all the hateful and homophobic comments we receive in our most personal moment,” the SYRIZA leader wrote. There was no immediate response from the government.

In Oct. 2023 Supreme Court Prosecutor Georgia Adeilini began an investigation into what were called homophobic comments against Kasselakis by the then recently-elected Mayor of Volos, Achilleas Beos.

That came after Beos said, “Our country has been governed by doctors and lawyers who have impoverished our homeland and its people. Instead of journalists addressing substantive matters, they are focused on Kasselakis. What are you trying to imply… that we should adopt children and produce f – – s? Is this the state of my homeland? What kind of progressives are you?”

There’s been no report since if anything was done about it although Kasselakis had urged judicial authorities to “fulfill their responsibilities.”
