Karmanos Partnering with The Toledo Clinic on New $30M Cancer Center

DETROIT – The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is partnering with The Toledo Clinic to establish a new $30 million cancer center in northwest Ohio, Crain’s Detroit Business reported April 7.

“Under the partnership, Karmanos will operate the radiation oncology program at a new freestanding cancer center in Maumee, outside Toledo,” Crain’s reported, adding that “it will open in spring 2022 and be part of the Side Cut Crossings, a 58-acre development that will include senior housing, a hotel and retail space.”

“Plans for establishing a cancer center in Maumee began in 2017, intending to give patients in northwest Ohio an option to driving many miles to Cleveland, Columbus or Detroit,” The Toledo Clinic officials told Crain’s.

“Karmanos and The Toledo Clinic will provide medical oncology services with multidisciplinary clinics, diagnostic imaging, pharmacy, laboratory, genetic counseling and social work services in 22 examination rooms and 24 infusion bays,” Crain’s reported, noting that “these services will give patients increased access to advanced cancer care, including proton beam therapy in Flint, and clinical trials, officials said.”

"This partnership represents a bold and ambitious collaboration for cancer treatment and research in Lucas County and northwest Ohio," Dr. Justin Klamerus, president of the Karmanos Cancer Hospital & Network, said in a statement, Crain’s reported.

"Our colleagues at The Toledo Clinic share a common vision with the entire team at Karmanos: use the very latest in treatment modalities combined with access to 'bench-to-bedside' clinical trials and precision medicine to achieve the goal of eradicating cancer."

“Over the years, Karmanos has collaborated with hospitals and cancer providers, including The Toledo Clinic in 2004 on cancer research,” Crain’s reported, adding that “however, it would be the first time Karmanos, which is one of 51 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the country, has entered the Ohio market as a provider.”

"Having the Karmanos Cancer Institute bring the third NCI designation to Ohio is very important," Mike D'Eramo, chief administrative offficer of The Toledo Clinic, said in a statement, Crain’s reported. "With that designation comes a significant increase in research protocols and clinical trials, as well as continued efforts to improve the standard of care in cancer treatment."

“Karmanos is deeply involved in cancer research and involved in dozens of clinical trial programs and new treatments,” Crain’s reported, noting that “telemedicine visits and other support services, including virtual support groups, social services and art therapy, will be available to patients through Karmanos and The Toledo Clinic.”

"Cancer is a heavy burden. When patients can be treated for cancer close to home, it makes a big difference. Not only are they able to reduce travel time, they can stay connected to their friends and family," Klamerus told Crain’s. "Knowing that world-class care is available nearby will have a tremendous impact on those seeking cancer care in northwest Ohio."

“The Toledo Clinic is a multispecialty group practice, consisting of more than 250 independent physicians and associated health care professionals, practicing in 40 medical and surgical specialties, at more than 60 locations, across northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan,” Crain’s reported.

“The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute was founded in 1995 through a $15 million donation from Peter Karmanos in honor of his late wife,” Crain’s reported, adding that “it merged into 15-hospital McLaren Health Care based in Grand Blanc in 2014. Karmanos is the largest cancer care provider in Michigan and operates its main hospital in Detroit with 15 regional cancer sites across the state
