Karamanlis: €2Μ in Fines Over Attiki Odos Shutdown in Snowstorm

February 23, 2022

ATHENS – Infrastructure and Transport Minister Kostas Karamanlis has decided to impose the highest fine permitted under by the law on the companies Attiki Odos SA and Attikes Diadromes (which operates and maintains the highway) for their share of responsibility for the problems that stalled traffic and trapped motorists during the heavy snowstorm on January 24, 2022.

Specifically, a 1.0-million-euro fine was imposed on each company. The minister’s decision was based on a report by an investigating committee set up by the ministry.

“After all the unacceptable things that occurred on Attiki Odos, the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis pledged to attribute responsibilities. In order for this to happen, the ministry had in 2020 established the legal framework for attributing responsibility to concessionnaires when motorways close. Today, for the first time, we are able to impose fines totalling 2 million euros,” Karamanlis stated.
