Kalo Mina Hosts Artist Meet and Greet in Cyprus

September 1, 2024

LIMASSOL, CYPRUS – Kalo Mina, the New York City-based platform that aims to expose Greek and Cypriot artists to the Hellenic Diaspora through interviews, events, and collaborations – hosted its first event since it was founded in 2021 at The Melting Pot Concept in Limassol, Cyprus this summer.

Kalo Mina is one of the only English websites focused on art and design news from Greece and Cyprus, featuring interviews with numerous up-and-coming and established artists there such as Georgia Lale, Nina Morari, Christina Papaioannou, Toumazos Charalambous, and Eleni Simoni, to name a few.

The interviews are released each month and are connected to the ‘Kalo Mina’ theme, the phrase that Greek speakers say to each other on the first day of each month to wish luck and prosperity for the weeks ahead.

The Kalo Mina art platform wants to maintain this sentiment every day, not just on the first day of the month, by sharing the joy of art. The Artist Meet and Greet event was open to the public and aimed to strengthen the local creative community. It was a place for discourse about the island’s current artistic landscape with networking opportunities among creatives, gallery owners, and art enthusiasts.

The gathering was hosted at The Melting Pot Concept, which was founded by Panayiotis Stelikos, who also owns arcube studio. This immersive, multi-sensory destination fuses art and design with the artistry of specialty coffee and culinary expertise. At the event, there was a communal canvas where guests could create their own designs under the theme ‘Cyprus Landmarks’. This theme honored the history and influence of Cyprus from ancient times until today. Visuals such as Kourion, the Carob Warehouse in Limassol, the Kamares Aqueduct, and olive branches, to name a few, adorned the canvas.

Following the event, Kalo Mina donated the completed artwork to the Ronald McDonald House of Charities Cyprus (RMHC), which is headquartered in Nicosia. RMHC works intensively to keep families together during difficult times. In collaboration with other RMHC branches worldwide, it helps families travel abroad to be near their child for the duration of their medical treatment. By empathizing with the children and their families, RMHC secures vital resources and ensures that children receive medical care from top hospitals globally.

The donation supported Kalo Mina’s goals of strengthening the artist community on the island and beyond, making art more accessible, and using art as a way to bring delight into the everyday. Event attendees included artists Nina Morari, Dinga, Eleni Kireeva, Antonios Charalambous, Stefan Prokopiou, Rafaela Neokleous, Andis Dimo, Anthi Kyriakou Christodoulos Andreou, gallery owner Viktoriia Velychko, and George Taxiarchopoulos, Director at Limassol Municipal Arts Centre-Papadakis Warehouses.

Dina Savva said, “I founded Kalo Mina with the intention of exposing Greek and Cypriot artists to the diaspora because there are incredible talents in these countries that deserve recognition. Through the interviews and news that we have shared on our platform, we have cultivated a strong community of like-minded artists and individuals in these local markets… This inaugural event in Cyprus was a way for us to honor those who have supported us, bring together creatives who might not have otherwise met, and help establish a new appreciation for art in numerous communities and organizations on the island.”

Local artist Nina Morari, who is known for her minimal one line prints and ceramics, helped coordinate this event with Kalo Mina. “I was thrilled to play a part in the Kalo Mina event because I support its mission of connecting and promoting Greek and Cypriot artists to a global audience… The energy at the event was palpable as artists and art enthusiasts collaborated on the communal canvas, which fostered a sense of collective creativity.”

Kalo Mina will release interviews with artist Stella Kapezanou later this summer and with an acclaimed Greek-American film director, producer, and screenwriter this fall. It is publishing a new series titled ‘Neighborhoods’ where creatives and influencers across Greece and Cyprus will share some of their favorite local spots to eat, drink, shop, and explore this fall.
