NICOSIA — A joint search and rescue exercise between Cyprus and Greece under the name "SALAMIS-02/21" took place on Monday, January 25, 2021.
The exercise was successfully carried out in the sea of the Republic of Cyprus, within its maritime search-and-rescue region, with the participation of the Greek frigate "Hydra" and an AW-139 helicopter from the 460 Search and Rescue Squadron of the Air Force Command of the Cypriot National Guard General Staff.
Responsible for the coordination and operational control of the air and sea rescue vessels and aircraft that took part in the exercise was the Search and Rescue Coordination Centre, in collaboration with the General Staff of the Hellenic Navy. The scenario concerned an airlift of an injured person from a ship in the open sea. Therefore the National Search and Rescue Plan "NEARCHOS" was implemented to deal with the incident.
This exercise is the second planned activity, in 2021, in the long-term cooperation on Search and Rescue issues between the forces of the Republic of Cyprus and the Greek Air Force in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
