Interior Ministry’s Legislative Initiative for Granting Citizenship

ATHENS — The legislative initiative of the interior ministry, which provides for the establishment of a system of nationwide examinations for the granting of citizenship to foreigners, puts an end to an inefficient system of rendering Greek citizenship, while strengthening the transparency of the system, Interior Minister Takis Theodorikakos said in an interview with Proto Thema on Friday.

"The system will be fair, fast, objective and completely transparent, so that there is no room for delays or bureaucracy and corruption," the interior minister explained, noting that "35,000 applications are pending. There have been applications since 2011. "
