ATHENS – In the wake of killings, stalkings and sexual harassment of women by their husbands, partners and boyfriends, Greek police said a hotline to help victims received 927 calls reporting domestic violence.

Greece has seen a string of femicides too and police said officers from July 15-21 responded to 534 of the complaints and made 338 arrests, with nine victims taken to shelters and 17 to forensic doctors or hospitals.

Greek police came under sharp criticism over the murder of a woman outside an Athens police station where she went seeking help from an ex-boyfriend she said was stalking her but was refused. He was waiting outside.

The domestic violence response units, which manage the majority of these incidents said it also provided the “panic button” app to 184 women that lets them quickly contact police for help and protection.

Police have also set up one or more specially designed “safe houses” in each regional police directorate to provide temporary shelter for victims of abuse and their children and families, including young.
