In India, PM Mitsotakis Says Greece Opens The Doorway to Europe

February 21, 2024

NEW DELHI – Marking the first to India of a Greek leader in 16 years, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis told Premier Narendra Modi that Greece is India’s path to the European Union.

“One only has to look at the map to see that Greece is India’s gateway to Europe,” he said. “Certainly, to achieve this, peace and stability must be achieved in the Middle East,” he said.

They discussed strategic cooperation, defense and cybersecurity, Mitsotakis continuing his outreach in Asia, including to Japan, with Greece already tightening relations with China.

Mitsotakis noted the proposed India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor while Modi referred to his visit to Athens in August of 2023 and said that Mitsotakis’ reciprocation was an “amazing opportunity.”

They talked about business prospects and doubling trade transactions between the countries by 2030 as well as connecting universities.

“We held discussions on finalizing the mobility and migration partnership agreement as soon as possible. This will help emboldening our people-to-people partnership,” said Modi.

Meanwhile, Mitsotakis also said he’s sure that the two countries “will finalize very quickly a very important agreement on migration and mobility,” without specifying details

Modi added, “It is a matter of happiness that Greece has decided to join the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative. We agree that all disputes and tensions should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.”
