Visiting Greece recently, Christina Kourpanidis-Serafine said she checked restaurants to see how they compare to the eatery in Deltona, Florida she has with her husband and family, My Greek Taverna.
“We’re doing very authentic things,” she said, crediting chef Nick. Kourpanidis for creating the menu. He is married to Samantha Kourpanidis while Christina is married to James Serafine, said Hometown News.
The restaurant opened June 28 and uses traditional recipes passed down by family members, checked by the chef. Kourpanidis-Serafine said, “One of our top old-world recipes would be our pastitsio, which is the Greek lasagna, something very unique to the Greek culture.” Another is keftedes, Greek meatballs.
The Kourpanidis’, 40-year residents of Deltona, emigrated from Greece to Long Island, N.Y., in 1968 and the restaurant got raves from Bella Cucina Italian restaurant owner Dawn Marie who loved the spanakopita and horiatiki. “My husband had the Gyro sandwich … the flavor was amazing and you could tell it was made fresh,” she said. That’s Greek.
