Humor: The Obamas’ “Weapon” Against Trump

Dressed in an almost military-like outfit – almost as if she were going to war, which in a sense she was – Michelle Obama, in my opinion, stole the show at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night. Her husband was good, but in my humble opinion, she was even better.

It’s important to note that she changed her approach to dealing with Trump. She was the first speaker to use humor against Trump, a rhetorical weapon that is extremely effective when used appropriately and by the right speaker. And here, we have a combination of both.

For years, Trump’s opponents have used the usual tactic of logic to convince the former president’s supporters to stop following him. This tactic, as is well known, hasn’t worked. At least, it hasn’t worked until recently. And those who know Trump say that nothing enrages him more than not being taken seriously or being mocked.

Wanting to emphasize the difference between Trump, the son of a wealthy father, and ordinary people, Michelle Obama said: “If we see a mountain in front of us, we don’t expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top,”  reminding everyone of the escalators in Trump’s Manhattan skyscraper that he used to descend to the ground floor for his press conference to announce his presidential candidacy.

With a mix of personal pain as well as satisfaction, she added: “For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us,” she said, because “his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hard-working, highly educated successful people who happened to be Black.”

And then she got to the heart of the matter: “Who’s going to tell him the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those Black jobs?”

(This was a response to Trump’s statement that immigrants are taking ‘Black jobs’).

Barack Obama followed a similar track: “There are the childish nicknames, the crazy conspiracy theories, this weird obsession with crowd sizes,” and at that moment he held his hands by the microphone, close together, with only a few inches between them.

He paused for a moment, and let the audience draw their own conclusions about what he meant.

These are undoubtedly two talented individuals – talented enough to overcome numerous obstacles for Obama to govern America for a full eight years. By achieving this, they may have paved the way for Harris as well, with the difference being that she is not only Black but also a woman.
