The expectations we set in our lives come hand in hand with potential consequences. Personal or professional, it is important to evaluate whether they are realistic and achievable in the context you are in, otherwise it makes it impossible to reach. Disappointments are sometimes inevitable in a working environment, considering the competitive society we live in; however, the complexity of personal relationships are likely to cause the same effect.
Denying the reality of a bad situation, or avoiding thinking about it at all, makes it worse, or keeps you stuck when you could be working on solving the problem.
Awareness is the first step to change. Be willing to face the problem, but don’t dwell on it 24 hours a day – that will just make you feel worse. Think about it enough to understand what you feel and the best way to respond, then focus on something more positive.
The gap between how you wanted things to turn out and how they actually did can lead to sadness and regret. Mourning is a step toward letting go. Take time to connect with your feelings in a compassionate way. Writing down your feelings or talking to a trusted friend can help.
They say, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger,” thus becoming a firm believer of this statement brings you one step closer to understanding the situation, and realizing that the outcome isn’t a setback, but instead, an important idea to engrave in your mind. Not only this is an opportunity for growth, but it allows you to sit back and reflect on what went wrong. People often view disappointments as a step back from where they want to be, however, this is not the case as it is part of the process. When things go wrong, it’s so easy to feel like it’s the end of the world, instead of seeing the bigger picture.
Communication with loved ones about your disappointment can bring some much-needed clarity. When you get an outside perspective other than your own, you can begin to see things for what they really are, rather than how you feel about them.
Trying a different approach to achieving your goals may mean stepping out of your comfort zone. Being open to exploring new options and ideas increases your chances of an accomplishment, therefore, taking risks may give you the result you aspire.
In personal relationships, it is vital to abolish any expectations you have of the other person, as it is that exact expectation which leads to disappointment.
Keeping a healthy mindset comes with accepting the loss, being aware of the situation, and being willing to move forward. Once you start training your brain to live consciously and spontaneously instead of being limited to peripheral outcomes, then a whole new game of life awaits.
