How Greek It Is on Staten Island Closes Its Doors

September 23, 2024

STATEN ISLAND – The Greek-American restaurant How Greek It Is on Staten Island permanently closed on Sunday, September 22, due to the retirement of its owner, Sophia Georgiopoulos.

Her personal note, translated back from the Greek, reads:

“After decades in the restaurant business, it’s time for me to rest and spend my free time with my children and grandchildren. For many years, I shopped for fresh ingredients by myself to make traditional Greek dishes, transported them, and then cooked them. I am 65 years old and no longer have the strength to keep up with this pace.
“Together with my husband, Dimitris, we dedicated our lives to restaurants. When he passed away in 2020, I realized that life is too short to waste it only on work. From now on, I will continue to cook, but only for family and friends.
“A big thank you to the customers who honored and supported us all these years.”

It should be noted that The National Herald had previously highlighted the health issues Dimitris Georgiopoulos faced, leading to a tremendous and touching response from the Greek-American community to cover his medical expenses.
