Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology Open House

BOSTON — Register here for Open House at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology, March 11th at 5:00 PM EST.

Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology continues to move forward in a manner that expresses its heritage, identity, and values as a community committed to excellence in higher education, the life of faith, and service to the Church. Our aim is to ensure that our future will be shaped on a renewed foundation of spiritually sensitive teaching, and practical preparation for service in the world. (HCHC Strategic Plan 2021)

Their mission embodies the historic and specific educational mission of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and its archdiocese in the United States through educating its students to articulate and understand the biblical, historical, dogmatic, ethical, and liturgical traditions of the Orthodox Church. Holy Cross offers men and women the opportunity to become spiritually mature persons through immersion in worship, theological studies, and service to community.

Graduate Studies Degree Programs in Theology

Master of Divinity (MDiv)

The intensive Master of Divinity graduate program prepares both men and women for a life of ordained or lay ministry. Graduate students learn to exemplify and to articulate the Orthodox tradition in its pastoral, liturgical, biblical, patristic, dogmatic, canonical, ethical, and missionary aspects. MDiv candidates develop knowledge, sensitivity, and faithfulness to the Church’s liturgical life through daily worship. Directed formation opportunities and supervised field education connect classroom learning to real-life experience. MDiv graduates become priests, deacons, theologians, chaplains, religious educators, youth ministers, or pursue further graduate studies in a variety of disciplines.

Master of Theological Studies (MTS)

The Master of Theological Studies allows students to gain proficiency in Orthodox theology and history. The two-year MTS degree educates students through the study of such disciplines as Church history, dogmatics, ethics, scripture, patristics, and canon law. Students learn to think theologically and critically about the Orthodox Christian tradition in today’s world. The MTS program is designed to offer a general introduction to Greek Orthodox theology. Students choose to specialize in an area of academic interest by enrolling in elective courses at both Holy Cross and the schools of the Boston Theological Institute. In addition to four semesters of full-time academic study, students are afforded the opportunity to participate in the integral religious life of the Holy Cross community in the context of daily worship and personal spiritual guidance.

Master of Theology (ThM)

The ThM program is particularly designed for those who desire to enhance a scholarly dimension in their priestly or ministerial vocations. It is especially appropriate for those preparing to teach, those interested in furthering their theological knowledge and spiritual life, or those intending to pursue doctoral work. The ThM program is research-oriented and includes a thesis component. Students concentrate on a chosen theological discipline. Candidates research one aspect of theology while demonstrating competence in one ancient and one modern language. ThM graduates go on to pursue studies at the doctoral level, to teach, or to apply their knowledge to enhance their ministries. Approaches to theological research include Biblical, Systematic, Historical and Practical.

Certificate Programs:

Certificate in Youth and Young Adult Ministry and Leadership

This program is designed as a post-college year of graduate study of theology, service as part of HCHC’s Office of Vocation & Ministry team, and training in some key leadership skills for life.

The Certificate program consists of 18 credits of graduate level academic work with a work study component. Students take courses while simultaneously taking part in a work-study that focuses on one particular aspect of ministry. The work-study is conducted through the Office of Vocation and Ministry's CrossRoad Summer Institute and Telos Project, giving participants intensive, mentored training as they deepen their theological knowledge and spiritual formation. Due to generous funding, several full-tuition scholarships are available.
