NEW YORK – The Hellenic Film Society USA (HFS) continues its monthly streaming series, Always on Sunday on Demand with two of the best-received Greek films of recent years: Little England, directed by Greece’s master filmmaker Pantelis Voulgaris, and Little Greek Godfather, directed by famed director Olga Malea.
The films will be streaming Sunday, April 4-Saturday, May 1.
Award-winning cinematography sets the scene for Little England, an epic tale of love and loss, and winner of six Hellenic Film Academy Awards, including Best Picture 2014. In the decades between the two world wars, the island of Andros was known as Little England, thanks to the wealth brought in by its burgeoning shipping industry. Behind the doors of an island mansion, a family drama of passion and star-crossed romance plays out. Two sisters are united and divided by a secret: their love for the same man.
This month’s programming is made possible by generous support from The Online Greek School.
Little Greek Godfather, ideal for family viewing, was filmed on location in Crete. A prominent Greek politician (think Andreas Papandreou) sends his American-raised 11-year- old son to Crete to baptize the baby of a local party boss and parliamentary candidate. Trying to prove himself, the boy struggles with the Greek language and Cretan peculiarities. His initiation into the world of politics will mark him for the rest of his life.
