Meropi Kyriacou Honored as TNH Educator of the Year
NEW YORK – Meropi Kyriacou, the new Principal of The Cathedral School in Manhattan, was honored as The National Herald’s Educator of the Year.
NEW YORK – The Hellenic Film Society USA (HFS) announced the two latest films, streaming worldwide Sunday, May 2-Monday, May 31, City of Children (Η Πόλη των Παιδιών), directed by Yorgos Gkikapeppas, and Jenny Jenny (Τζένη-Τζένη), directed by Dimos Dimopoulos.

City of Children (2011), running time: 93 minutes, is director Yorgos Gkikapeppas’ debut feature. The film includes four powerful stories dealing with pregnancy, each representing a harrowing perspective of the lives of couples in a city gripped by despondency. The cast features Kika Georgiou (Nadine), Iosif Polizoides (Nadine’s neighbor), Vassilis Bisbikis (Fotis), Natalia Kalimeratzi (Liza), Dimitris Kotzias (Stranger on the road), Anna Kalaitzidou (Dina), Leonidas Kakouris (Dina’s husband, a doctor), Iro Loupi (Marina, Dina’s doctor), Yorgos Ziovas (Antonis), Maria Tsima (Vasso), and Michalis Sarandis (Yannis).
Audiences may be familiar with the popular actors Bisbikis and Kakouris, known for their work in the Greek television drama Agries Melisses.
The film is appropriate for mature viewers only and is in Greek and some Arabic with English subtitles.
City of Children won the Greek Federation of Film Critics Award for Best Film, the International Film Critics Award for Best Greek Film at the Thessaloniki International Film Festival 2011, and three Hellenic Film Academy Awards, including Best Actress, Kika Georgiou.
Jenny Jenny (1966), running time: 103 minutes, features Tzeni Karezi (Tzeni Skoutari), Dionysis Papagiannopoulos (Kosmas Skoutaris), Andreas Barkoulis (Nikos Mantas), Mary Lalopoulou (Diana Kassandri), Eleni Zafeiriou (Matina Skoutari), and Lambros Konstantaras (Miltos Kassandris) among the cast.
In order to help her political influencer father solve his financial problems, a young woman consents to a marriage of convenience to his political opponent, a parliamentary candidate. The trio of Karezi, Barkoulis and Konstantaras– key players in the Greek film industry in the 1960s– adds sparkle to this romantic comedy from the golden age of Greek cinema. The film is in Greek with English subtitles.
