He Brought Greece to Salem, NH

December 8, 2023

BOSTON – Athanasios Sioras brought another piece of Greece to the city of Salem in New Hampshire, opening a kiosk, a kind of small, open store featuring Greek products within the shopping complex at the well-known Mall, located at 275 Rockingham Park Blvd.

Sioras’ new venture is just a few feet from his famous restaurant, Ya Mas, which, since last July when it moved to the large and spacious space in the Mall, has been constantly and continuously full, to the point that many times there are lines of customers patiently waiting to enter for lunch or dinner. From the afternoon and until Sunday evening, the renowned Boston artist Giorgos Kaminaris entertains Greek-American and American customers with his bouzouki playing and singing.

The Greek Products kiosk offers a large collection of gifts and souvenirs, including sweets that come directly from Thessaloniki, such as chocolate Christmas, kourabiedes, melomakarona, spoon sweets, chocolates, cookies, rusks – and elaborately decorated gifts with a variety of sweets.

It should be noted that this is the first time there is such a strong presence of Greece in the of Salem, meaning such a high-quality restaurant like Ya Mas and a store of Greek products inside the Mall, where thousands of people pass by, especially during the holiday season.

Sioras, speaking to The National Herald and responding to the question of how he came up with the idea to start the store inside the Mall, said, “I saw the love people show for the Greek cuisine at Ya Mas, which, as you can see, is constantly full from the morning we opened. I thought that people would also appreciate the opportunity to buy Greek products, and as it turns out, they do.”

He also mentioned that “it’s the first week since we started, and thank God, it’s going very well. As you know, a lot of people pass by every day, especially now during the holidays, and, as you can see, they stop, inquire about Greek products, and make purchases.”

When asked what people are buying, Sioras answered, “a bit of everything,” and added, “our American compatriots are crazy about our sweets, such as kourabiedes, melomakarona, and chocolates.” He also said, “our fellow Greeks spread the word, and people come from surrounding cities such as Lowell, Andover, Methuen, from Boston, and from Nashua, Milford, and Manchester New Hampshire.”

Sioras has decorated the Ya Mas restaurant with Christmas trees, lights, gifts, ornaments with angels, and illuminated images. He said, “thank you to The National Herald” for the support. “Many Greek-Americans came after the article you wrote a few months ago, and they told us they read it in TNH. Even the well-known Greek-American TV anchorwoman from WCVB 5, Maria Stefanos, came with her aunt, who had read about it in TNH.”
